Southern Charm & Birthday Cheer at Poogan’s Porch 🎉🍽️

Tucked into the heart of downtown Charleston at 72 Queen Street, Poogan’s Porch was a delightful first-time experience for my family—and one we won’t soon forget. We visited to celebrate my sister’s birthday, and this charming spot delivered everything we hoped for: cozy ambiance, rich Southern flavors, and a few ghost stories to spice things up.

🏡 A Victorian Gem with a Spirited Past

Poogan’s Porch is housed in a beautiful Victorian-style home, complete with large front porches that practically beg you to sit and stay awhile. It’s said to be haunted (yes, really!), and if you’re curious, I highly recommend reading up on the history behind the house—and the sweet story of how it got its name. It adds a fun layer of mystery to your meal.

🍳 Brunch or Dinner? You Can’t Go Wrong

They serve brunch daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and dinner from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM, so whether you’re planning a midday meet-up or a celebratory evening, Poogan’s Porch has you covered. Just a heads-up: it’s a smaller space, so reservations are a must, especially if you’re dining with a larger group. We had seven in our party (including two toddlers), and we had to call ahead to make sure they could accommodate us.

🧀 Toddler-Approved Appetizers & Southern Staples

We kicked things off with a couple of appetizers that were a hit with everyone—including the littles:

  • Mac & Cheese – creamy, comforting, and gobbled up in seconds
  • Pimento Cheese Fritters – crispy on the outside, melty on the inside, and full of Southern flavor

They also offer a kids menu, which is a lifesaver for picky eaters. And yes, parents—there are changing tables in the bathrooms, so no stress if you’re dining with infants.

🍗 Entrees That Hit Every Southern Note

For our main dishes, we tried:

  • Sarsaparilla BBQ Short Rib – rich, tender, and beautifully sauced
  • Chicken & Dumplings – classic comfort food done right
  • Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf – a hearty favorite that the men in our group devoured

Each dish was flavorful and satisfying, perfect for a celebratory meal. And with a full bar offering specialty cocktails, zero-proof drinks, wine, and beer, there’s something for everyone to sip and savor.

If you’re looking for a spot to gather the family for brunch or celebrate a special occasion with a true taste of the South, Poogan’s Porch is a must-visit. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the little touches—like the kids menu and changing tables—make it especially family-friendly.
