When my family arrived in Charleston for their first visit, I knew we had to kick things off with something memorable—and delicious. So on their very first night, we headed to Palmira BBQ, a spot I’d been dying to try myself. It was a first for all of us, and let me tell you: it did not disappoint.
Walking into Palmira BBQ, you get that classic BBQ vibe—one line, counter service, and the mouthwatering aroma of smoked meats wafting through the air. You start by choosing your meats, then move down the line for sides, desserts, drinks, and finally, the register. It’s simple, efficient, and lets the food do all the talking.
But what makes Palmira BBQ truly special is its heart. The restaurant is a tribute to Pitmaster Hector Garate’s grandmother and the sustainable cattle ranch she grew up on in Puerto Rico. That heritage and love for tradition shine through in every bite.
We went all-in with a family-style feast, ordering a variety of meats, sides, and desserts so everyone could sample a little bit of everything. If you’re heading to any BBQ joint, this is hands-down the best way to go.
Here’s what made it to our table:
- Beef cheeks – melt-in-your-mouth tender
- The HUGE beef rib – a showstopper in both size and flavor
- House sausage – smoky and perfectly spiced
- Half chicken – juicy and packed with flavor
- Barbacoa – rich, savory, and unforgettable
And the sides? Let’s just say the mac and cheese got the toddler seal of approval—no small feat! Every dish was a hit, and we left with full bellies and happy hearts.
Palmira BBQ is great for families. They have high chairs available, which made dining with little ones easier. One thing to note: there wasn’t a changing table in the bathrooms, so plan accordingly if you’ve got diaper-duty on deck.
If you’re looking for a fun, flavorful, and family-friendly dinner spot in Charleston, Palmira BBQ should be at the top of your list. Just a heads-up—like any great BBQ place, some cuts of meat can sell out, so get there early to snag your favorites.
