If you’re craving authentic Mexican flavors with a side of hospitality, look no further than Maria’s, a vibrant gem tucked into a cozy strip mall on Johns Island. This spot brings the traditions of Jalisco, Mexico straight to your plate—and it’s become one of my husband’s and my favorite go-to restaurants in the area.
Step inside Maria’s and you’re instantly greeted by bright colors, festive décor, and a lively atmosphere that feels like a celebration of Hispanic culture. It’s everything you want from a neighborhood Mexican restaurant—warm, welcoming, and full of flavor.
We’re bar sitters by nature, and yes, we bring our 2-year-old right along with us. If the bar seats are full, we settle into a table in the bar area. The staff always greets us with a smile, a basket of chips and salsa, and—our favorite touch—sliced oranges for our little guy. It’s those thoughtful gestures that keep us coming back.
Let’s talk margaritas. Maria’s is known for them. During the pandemic, they even sold their margarita mix to-go, so we could enjoy our favorite drinks from the comfort of home. These days, when we walk in, the bartender lifts a glass with a knowing look—“Of course!” I always go for the house margarita on the rocks, no salt. Simple, classic, perfect. My husband likes to mix it up between a margarita and one of their ice-cold beers.
Maria’s serves up lunch and dinner, with a menu that covers all the Mexican staples—and then some.
- Starters: Nachos, queso with chorizo, guacamole, and surprisingly delicious fried calamari (don’t knock it till you try it).
- Main dishes: Fajitas, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, chicken and seafood entrées.
- Lunch specials: Combo plates that are perfect for a midday treat.
Whether you’re in the mood for something cheesy, spicy, or grilled to perfection, Maria’s has you covered.
I’ve got a serious sweet tooth, so dessert is non-negotiable. Maria’s offers a small but satisfying dessert menu. We usually order a scoop of vanilla ice cream for our son, and my husband and I share the churros with ice cream—crispy, warm, and totally indulgent. They also serve sopapillas, fried ice cream, and more if you’re feeling adventurous.
Maria’s doesn’t take reservations, but you can usually walk right in. Weekend dinners can get a bit busy, so you might have a short wait—but it’s worth it.
Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch, a festive dinner, or just a margarita and some chips at the bar, Maria’s delivers every time. It’s a place where flavor meets family, and where every visit feels like a mini getaway to Jalisco.
